Himalayan tahr
Big curved horns, a shaggy mountain mane and a face built for the Himalayas — one of the rarest animals you'll meet on any New Zealand farm park.
The Himalayan tahr is a wild mountain goat from the high ridges of the Himalayas. They were brought to New Zealand in 1904 and released near Aoraki / Mount Cook, where they took to the Southern Alps so well that they're now managed as a pest in the high country — even though they're considered at risk in their native range.
You won't find many on a farm park. Keeping tahr takes a special licence, and it's one we're proud to hold — so Glenlothian is one of very few places in the country where you can stand a few metres from one. Our male is the showpiece: those sweeping horns and that thick ruff are exactly what he'd wear on a Himalayan ridgeline. He's surprisingly relaxed around visitors, and best of all at feeding time.
